This book deals with the theme of clay modeling in the ancient Greek world. From a technical perspective, it addresses various themes that current research has strongly renewed in the field of ancient craftsmanship. Thus, the question of artisanal collaborations has allowed several authors to question the place of the "plastès", the modeler, in the creation of prototypes of terracotta but also of the models used for bronze, or even on the relationships between the creators of figurines, ceramics and bronzes. The manufacturing techniques specific to modeling have been approached on the one hand from the point of view of the regional traditions to which they are linked (Athens, Corinth, Argos, Cyprus, etc.), on the other hand from the point of view of their combination with other terracotta techniques, throwing, but especially molding, which does not mechanically entail an abandonment of the modeler's gesture. This book is therefore intended to be an original contribution, through its subject and the documentation presented, to ancient Greek craftsmanship from the Geometric period to the Hellenistic period, a major research focus of the Camille Jullian Center.
