Author of a geographical treatise entitled On the Ocean , Pytheas of Marseille lived in the 4th century century BC. Of his text, unfortunately lost, only a few fragments remain today. It contains the oldest mentions of Britain, Great Britain and the famous island of Thule, located somewhere on the Arctic Circle. We also owe to Pytheas a theory of tides, the determination of the celestial pole as well as several latitude surveys.

From these rare elements, from Antiquity to the present day, historians have attempted, with varying degrees of success, to reconstruct what appears to be a maritime expedition to the northwest of Europe to an enigmatic boreal region where, according to Pytheas, all navigation becomes impossible due to the changing state of the sea surface. Embracing more than twenty centuries of exegesis, questions, controversies and reappropriations of the character, François Herbaux presents for the first time a synthesis of the "Pytheas dossier". Incorporating the results of the most recent work on the subject, he strives to clearly distinguish what is based on written sources, scientific hypotheses or the imagination of the authors.

From this meticulous investigation emerges a Pytheas, a pioneer of scientific exploration, a little-known scientist whose research made a major contribution to the science of his time.
