Claudel never stopped translating the Bible, and first of all every time a quotation came to his pen, rejecting existing versions, since, Pierre Emmanuel recalls, "all translations made him feel sick."

Claudel made the psalms his daily food, as Pierre Claudel wrote, translating in a state of prayer, at random one day, as this text found on the back of a draft letter to General de Gaulle proves.

From this collection, we take here the Psalms called "of penitence" which include, in addition to the Miserere and the De profundis, the other songs of David devoted to imploration.
