The historian Procopius constitutes the principal source, sometimes the only one for certain events, for the history of the reign of Justinian (527-565); he is the Thucydides of his time, the filter which allows us to understand the court of Justinian and Theodora. It became urgent to publish a new annotated translation of the Persian Wars , whose French translation dates back to F. Cousin, several centuries ago. Significant events took place during these wars, such as the Nika revolt in Constantinople and the famous plague known as the Justinian plague, which fully deserved a publication such as this one. This work closes the collection of Justinian's Wars as told by Procopius, and also presents complementary texts, those of Nonnosus, Theophanes of Byzantium, John Malalas and John of Epiphany, which shed particular light on the main text. As in his other stories already published in Belles Lettres ( War against the Vandals , History of the Goths ), the reader will recognize the lively style of Procopius, both "classicizing" and a true writer concerned with varying the reader's pleasures and suggesting his personal involvement in the heart of events.
