Through a chronological and transnational journey (from North Africa to West Asia), the book explores the role of Paris in the development of modern Arab art, inviting us to explore the places of training, exhibition, exchange, and encounter. The works gathered here come from the reserves of French museums or family archives, but also from major foundations and museums in the Arab world.
In light of a history of decolonization detailed in four chronologies (1908-1988), more than one hundred and thirty artists are presented, all of whom have studied, lived, exhibited, or campaigned in Paris, whether briefly or for a long time. Beyond the artistic domain, they embody a Paris that is both colonial and anticolonial, a cosmopolitan and supportive refuge.
