Nicolas Poussin is undoubtedly the great French painter of the 18th century. Described successively as a "philosopher painter", "Christian painter" or "libertine painter", he is above all an artist of great spirituality. The Christian dimension of his art has, however, long been neglected, even contested, while his sacred compositions are among his most moving productions and bear witness to a very personal meditation on God. The work of Poussin, a classical genius, constitutes a corpus apart in 17th-century Baroque Rome. Singular in style, but also in the meaning of his paintings, Poussin is the only artist who was able to reconcile sacred and profane traditions in an eminently poetic manner, inserting ancient symbols and allegories into his biblical subjects, enriching his secular compositions with a Christian consonance. His art constitutes a new synthesis of exceptional originality and power of inspiration. Let us allow the beauty of his works of sacred inspiration to speak for themselves and discover the keys that allow us to understand this painting, which Poussin himself said we had to know how to learn to "read."
