In 1868, the president of the Commission responsible for the construction of what would become the Musée de Picardie, Charles Dufour, vehemently refused to host Andromeda, a plaster statue by the Abbeville sculptor Edmond Levêque. Dufour and his refusal of a "plaster" museum reflect the low regard this material received for several decades.
