Recent research in the Fontainebleau State Forest has revealed the previously unsuspected existence of a particularly original style of rock engravings. These engravings, essentially consisting of geometric motifs accompanied by schematic representations of figures, quadrupeds, and fantastical creatures, appear on the walls of rock cavities but also on small blocks of sandstone deposited under rocky overhangs. These signs can be considered symbolic representations of mythological constructions adopted or developed by a population or some of its representatives. Some of the engraved elements refer to images from protohistory, while many figures remain without known equivalent to this day.
