The successful novelist Pierre Loti (1850-1923) overshadowed the illustrator. Under his real name of Julien Viaud, as a reporter and for pleasure, he nevertheless composed, over the course of his campaigns as a young naval officer, a remarkable graphic and ethnographic work. Here it is brought together for the first time. More than five hundred drawings, accompanied by the engravings taken from them and texts by the writer, form a unique travel diary around the world, to the faraway places of this polymorphous and refined artist: Tierra del Fuego, Easter Island, Tahiti, Brazil, North America, Senegal, Maghreb, Adriatic, Indochina, Japan, but also Brittany and his native Saintonge, without forgetting his beloved "Stamboul". From simple sketch to accomplished watercolor, the sure and inspired line brings out a profusion of portraits and events, astonishments and fantasies, visions. The world of one of the last Romantics.
