What is a war photograph? An aerial photograph? A Robert Capa shot? A propaganda image...?
Through the fate of images - some unpublished, others iconic - this exhibition highlights the plurality, the polysemy and, ultimately, the posterity of photographs produced in times of war, torn between an objective account of the facts and the subjectivity of points of view.
From the siege of Rome by the French army in 1849 to the conflict in Syria, this exhibition tells the public the stories of these photographs taken to inform, document, prove, legitimize, deceive, denounce, bear witness, remember, sell and - ultimately - represent war.
The catalogue follows the chronological path of the exhibition, divided into ten sequences, each devoted to an evolution in the uses of photography or to a particular perspective on a moment in the history of photography in war. In addition to the essays, each section presents a focus—which will lead the reader to question the processes of highlighting and iconizing photographs—and an interview. These focusses and interviews serve as the backbone of the catalogue and allow for a deeper reflection.
This book is an unprecedented collection of war photography, educational, fast-paced and richly illustrated!
