A major figure in figurative painting, internationally renowned, Philippe Cognée (born in 1957) has been working since the 1980s on instantly recognizable canvases which, created in encaustic and then reworked with an iron, create blurred, trembling visions.
Mainly structured around the entire Basel Catalogue (2003-2013), composed of 1,100 works, the exhibition and the catalogue address the themes of repainting and proliferation dear to the Nantes artist. Particular emphasis is also given to Philippe Cognée's older productions as well as around fifteen new plant works that enter into dialogue with Antoine Bourdelle's sculptures.
The unpublished interview with Philippe Cognée by Laurence Bertrand-Dorléac and the texts by Colin Lemoine and Pierre Bergounioux enrich the subject and allow the reader to understand the work and its genesis.
