How to think about photographic gazes? While photography is commonly presented as an "art without gaze," that is, as a mechanical or natural reproduction of reality, we propose to rethink photographic technique as the implementation of situated devices. Photographic gazes then appear as so many social processes, for which photographers are not solely responsible. As situated activities, photographic gazes bring together multiple factors that influence them and each time give them a particular cultural significance. The notions of "experience," "perspective," and "socio-technical framework," for example, allow us to think about their pragmatic and social character and shed interdisciplinary light on their activity.
