Using various textual and iconographic sources, the author explores the way in which the ancient Egyptians conceived the world, put it into words and images, that is to say, quite simply, their way of being in the world.
This work brings together for the first time the various images of the world as conceived by the ancient Egyptians. Most of them reproduced in drawings, they are described and studied with care, thus complementing the textual knowledge we have on the subject. The iconography of each constituent element of the cosmos is addressed, that of the sky, of the element or elements supporting it as well as that of the earth. The same is true not only of the Nun, which is equivalent to what the created world is not, but also of the borders which separate the two universes and, in fact, which define them.
The author also seeks to understand the origin of these representations and to analyze their evolution over time, and specifies their nature as well as their function, which testifies to the desire on the part of the ancient Egyptians to maintain the cosmos in balance.
The objective of this work is multiple: to give the reader an overview of the cosmological representations of ancient Egypt, to introduce him to the reading of images, a discipline which is still in its infancy, and to lead him to reflect on the way in which human beings think and represent the world in which they live.
