"I painted the mountains for ten days and the river for five more. I would like to cross these landscapes and climb these heights to their peaks. But today I don't have the impetus to put on my traveler's shoes; I prefer to contemplate these sketches, which are so many motionless journeys."
Wang Hui (1632-1717)
The Chih Lo Lou Collection ("The Pavilion of Perfect Bliss"), housed at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, brings together masterpieces of painting from the Ming (1368-1644) and Uing (1644-1912) dynasties. Created at a key moment in Chinese history, these highly poetic works reflect the aspirations of scholars to withdraw from the world; to live among wooded hills and inaccessible mountains. This work is an invitation to contemplate an autumn grove, peach blossoms and mist-drenched mountains where a spring gushes forth, as much as to discover and understand the stories of these major artists with their exceptional works.
