Exhibition catalog, Fondation Vincent Van Gogh, Arles, from April 21 to October 28, 2018. Bilingual text in French and English. Paul Nash (1889-1946), a British painter and precursor of English modernism, lived through both world wars, transcribing the troubles of his time in his painting through the ambivalence of recurring motifs such as the sun, and seeking in the dreamlike quality of his scenes a way to escape the prevailing gloom. This exhibition, the first of this scale devoted to him in France, brings together photographs, drawings, and paintings, as well as a documentary collection showing his attachment to painters such as Cézanne and Lurçat.
