Even today, in contemporary conflicts, heritage is not simply collateral damage. As the legacy of a people, a symbol of its identity and sovereignty, heritage is also a target, a strategic and ideological issue, to the point that, since 1998, its destruction has been considered a war crime by the International Criminal Court. This qualification is largely the legacy of the Second World War, which was particularly destructive for heritage, targeted by looting and spoliation and victim of bombing by both enemy and allied armies. As we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of this conflict in 2025, this book wishes to focus on this lesser-known aspect of the war. It thus highlights the fate of the heritage of the Eure during and after the war, without forgetting a detour through the current situation of the issue.
