The beginning of the 19th century saw the development of a significant artistic literature. Numerous works were published, disseminating biographies of the great masters of the past, and especially of the Renaissance. The lives of Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo—to name only the main ones—thus provided ample subjects to depict, whether real events or anecdotes fabricated from scratch by biographers, led by Giorgio Vasari.
The "Passion Renaissance" exhibition looks back at this phenomenon in the history of taste that contributed to making certain 16th-century artists the popular icons we know today.
