This second monographic work on Pascal Berthoud presents a collection of oil paintings produced between 2021 and 2023. A critical text by Rolando Bassetti, director of the Centre d'art contemporain d'Yverdon-les-Bains in Switzerland, offers an analysis of the recent painting series Geometric Forces , Betrachten den Mond and Escape Velocity . Throughout his reflection, Bassetti shows that these paintings are part of a logical continuity of Pascal Berthoud's research in the fields of drawing and sculpture. The extensive repertoire of materials alone—from the fluidity of oil paint to the hardness of metal in his monumental sculptures—reveals the diversity of emotional states emerging from Pascal Berthoud's representations.
Oscillating between figuration and abstraction, the recent paintings discovered in this book question our relationship to the fragmentation of society, to memory, to the environment, to reality and to the image. Richly illustrated, the book includes reproductions of pictorial works visible in the artist's latest exhibitions in Switzerland and Europe. The question of painting in Pascal Berthoud's work is approached in this work in a new way thanks to the highlighting of the eminently personal and varied forms adopted by the Genevan during his plastic research. Favoring the phenomena of vision and the treatment of space, the exploration of the organic and the geometric, the representation of geological matter, Pascal Berthoud's painting reflects his favorite themes and constitutes a central role in his most current approach.
