With 70 tapestries, ranging from the 15th to the 20th century, Saumur presents one of the most important weaving heritages in France. Some works are masterpieces of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance that would not look out of place in the greatest museums, and most are unique pieces made for special orders. Many of them are protected as Historic Monuments and are still today, as in the past, hung during the summer in the churches, chapel and castle of the city. This originality of being works of art still in use further adds to the interest of visitors to this Loire town already famous for its charm. From September 18 to November 10, 2019, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, the City of Saumur and the Department of Maine-et-Loire, are organizing an exhibition of 39 of these tapestries, in the Grand Dortoir, the only room able to accommodate so many works. Subsequently, it is likely that other exhibitions will be organized in other locations.
