Ôta Hirotarô (1912-2007) is one of the first and most famous historians of Japanese architecture. His textbooks on the history of architecture are still acclaimed by the public today. In this book, we offer the annotated translation of two of his manuscripts, which synthesize the history of Japanese architecture and brought it into modern historiography. The first text, partisan, engaged in the definition of Japanese national identity in 1954, is entitled "Peculiarities of Japanese Architecture". It was published in 1954 and is regularly reprinted at the head of his best-selling work entitled "Introduction to the History of Japanese Architecture (1947). The second text, entitled "History of Japanese Architecture", is a summary of the same work and was published in 1966. The photographs are taken from the collector's edition edited by Ôta Hirotarô, "Japanese Architecture and Gardens" (1966), and signed by the architectural photographer Tsujimoto Yonesaburô.
