Focusing on the perfumes of Egypt, this exhibition presents some 80 objects preserved at the Egyptian Museums of Cairo, Coptic and Islamic Art, which bear witness to the history of perfumed oils, ointments and incense from the Pharaonic era to the Greco-Roman, Coptic and Arab periods. Trade between Egypt and its neighbors, notably the land of Punt, has provided resins essential for the production of incense and perfume since the Old Kingdom.
Other raw materials originating from Egypt, such as lotus, were used to make the main perfumes mentioned in temples of the Greco-Roman period. Far beyond cosmetics intended for women and men, perfumed oils and other ointments proved to be absolutely essential in medicine, mummification, and religious life. Olfactory experiences of ancient scents and virtual reality enrich this journey retracing several millennia of history in the fascinating world of perfumes and the know-how of the ancient Egyptians in the field of ointments and cosmetics.
