Of the 600 palaces and houses recorded by the scholars of the Egyptian Expedition in 1800, 29 remained in 1970, listed in the Inventory of Historical Monuments. While some of these palaces have been remarkably restored, such as that of Emir Taz or the Harawî house, others have continued to deteriorate and some have now disappeared. The plans and photographs that survive have therefore acquired inestimable value. The IFAO has decided to gradually reissue this pioneering work, published between 1970 and 1983. Very quickly sold out, Palaces and Houses of Cairo, the work of a specialist in the crafts and arts of the Maghreb and the Middle East and an architect involved in the restoration of some of these buildings, constituted a milestone in the heritage awareness that emerged in the 1990s around Islamic Cairo. The plans, architectural surveys and photographs that make up the work will allow the reader to rediscover the neighborhoods, streets, courtyards, rooms, passages and roofs of the last most beautiful palaces and bourgeois residences of Mamluk and Ottoman Cairo. In order to reach a wider audience, this new edition is accompanied by a summary in Arabic retaining the essential points of each architectural study. This first volume presents the Qāʿa Dardīr, the Maqʿad Mamāʾi, the palace of Qāyt Bāy, the palace of al-Razzāz, the palace of Raḍwān Bey and the Manzil al-Sinnārī.
