The Museum of Modern Art in Paris is dedicating one of the first retrospectives in France to the Austrian artist Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980). Demonstrating the strength with which Kokoschka challenged the artistic creation of his time, Oskar Kokoschka: A Wild Animal in Vienna brings together a unique selection of the artist's most significant works.

In its structure and content, the catalogue follows the artist's rich journey as he navigates between the cities and countries he passes through (Vienna, Dresden, Paris, Prague, London, Switzerland), retracing seven decades of creation – from 1907 to 1973 – and reflects the audacity that Oskar Kokoschka, witness to the great upheavals of the century, demonstrated in his approach to painting.

The didactic book is based on contextualizing texts, a chronology, and a wealth of documentation consisting of illustrations and writings by the artist in each section. It is supplemented by essays by recognized specialists and a text by Maryline Desbiolles paying tribute to the artist's poetry.
