In 1948, Oscar Chelimsky (1923-2010), an American painter born in New York, came to Paris with his wife, Eleanor, a pianist. The couple had no idea they would live there for twenty years.
In Paris, Chelimsky rubbed shoulders with many artists, including the sculptor Brancusi, a neighbor of his studio on the Impasse Ronsin.
Oscar Chelimsky has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. His work has been praised by critics, including the poet Jacques Dupin.
In 1954, Oscar and Eleanor bought a house in the south of France, in the Ardèche region, in Saint-Maurice-d'Ibie. They came there in the summer with their children.
In 1970, the Chelimsky family returned to the United States, but the Ardèche house was preserved.
This edition, compiled by Stéphane Rochette, traces the life and work of Chelimsky in the 1950s and 1960s. It places the artist among the painters of his time, and places him within what was called the "Jeune École de Paris".
In 1958, Oscar Chelimsky wrote a text on Brancusi. These Some Memories of Brancusi are published at the end of the volume.
