A major representative of lyrical abstraction, Olivier Debré (1920-1999) embodies both the image of a painter with an international career and that of an artist whose native land nourishes his creativity: the Loire and its landscapes are fundamental to his perception of space and permeate his work. The hundredth anniversary of his birth is an opportunity to present a lesser-known, more intimate side of the artist by invoking the artistic context that saw his birth in painting and, more broadly, in the visual arts. In order to restore his work to its historical depth, the following are studied in turn: his beginnings, after the Second World War and up to the 1970s, marked by the power of the reference to Picasso and Cubism, the themes of the Occupation and Nazism, the dialogue with the artists of the second School of Paris – Nicolas de Staël, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Hans Hartung, etc.; his connection with Touraine and the Loire, marked by the emergence of the notion of "fervent abstraction", a true immersion in the landscape; his "steps aside" towards other forms of creation such as ceramics, the illustrated book, stained glass, which reveal a creativity beyond the painted form. Olivier Debré is already a classical artist, like Nicolas de Staël, Hans Hartung or Pierre Soulages, it was therefore important to give him back his place in the history of French art of the second half of the 20th century and to bring his works into dialogue with those of his peers.
