This book explores the place of the Dakhla and Kharga oases in Egypt and the Ottoman Empire. It aims to contribute to the reflection on the characteristics and limits of the notion of Ottomanity, as seen by the inhabitants of this region, which, from Cairo, seemed distant and isolated. It draws on several sets of private archives, largely unpublished, supplemented by travelers' accounts and contemporary documentation. Despite their distance from the Nile Valley and their very specific natural environment, the Oases were governed administratively and judicially in the same way as the rest of Egypt. Their taxation was specific, as were their resources, primarily agricultural. Due to the threat of Bedouin raids, they housed a large garrison. The book studies the effects of this military presence on oasis society in the 16th - 18th centuries , and shows the gradual erasure of Ottoman specificities, then of their memory, during the 19th century .
