This text is the first ever published by Paul Gauguin; it appeared in two installments in the short-lived magazine "La Moderniste illustré" in the summer of 1889. It had never before been republished in its entirety and with annotations. Gauguin reacted with passion and malice to the presence of "contemporary" art in the famous Universal Exhibition of 1889, which saw the inauguration of the Eiffel Tower, the arrival of Balinese dancers and Buffalo Bill's "circus".
