An innovative and pioneering artist, the French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) built a body of work as vast as it is complex over the course of fifty years. Her work gained international recognition in 1961 when she participated in The Art and Assemblage, a prestigious exhibition organized at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Since then, Saint Phalle has been invited to exhibit solo works numerous times around the world. These joyful and luminous Nanas have become her signature. However, the artist and her work cannot be understood solely in light of these works. This catalogue, which accompanies the artist's first comprehensive retrospective in Belgium—a retrospective being held at the Beaux-Arts Mons (BAM)—explores Saint Phalle's multifaceted practice and examines her multidisciplinary work, which includes paintings, assemblages, sculptures, performances, public works, architectural projects, films, and plays. It surveys Saint Phalle's entire career and shows how she used her boundless imagination and unique worldview to break out of the typically female space and become one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. The title Here Everything Is Possible is a statement Niki de Saint Phalle made about her Tarot Garden, a park studded with monumental sculptures in Tuscany, Italy. In the present context, however, it should be read as a reference to her entire artistic process, which, in her eyes, is one of limitless possibilities. This comprehensive and richly illustrated catalog includes new scholarly texts by Catherine Francblin, Alison Gingeras, Denis Laoureux, Camille Morineau, Kyla McDonald, and Xavier Roland. These essays are complemented by interviews with Daniel Abadie and Marcelo Zitelli, both of whom were lifelong friends of the artist, as well as an illustrated biography.
