Until the middle of the 18th century, Nepal referred only to the Kathmandu Valley, an essential crossing point between the Indian and Tibetan worlds.

Its inhabitants, the Newars, developed a brilliant and original art, which found its initial impetus in that of India, but acquired a considerable reputation of its own.

The arts of Buddhism and Hinduism flourished in parallel in the valley, including in their tantric, esoteric form. The Nepalese collection of the Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts, gradually built up since the end of the 19th century, now includes more than a hundred pieces, forming an exceptional ensemble for its quality and iconographic richness.

Exhibition "Nepal. Art of the Kathmandu Valley" from October 13, 2021 to January 10, 2022 at the National Museum of Asian Arts - Guimet
