Ndary Lo (1961-2017) is an internationally renowned Senegalese sculptor, considered one of the most active African artists in the development of installations. He is known to most for his "Marching Men," very tall metal silhouettes that soar towards the sky. And indeed, man was at the center of his research, as were AIDS, slavery, and the tragic fate of migrants. The volume edited by Jacques Rouayroux and Sylvain Sankalé brings together the artist's metal works and his more ephemeral creations, often contained in dusty notebooks, private correspondence, or unpublished documents. This book is in accordance with the last wishes of Ndary Lo who, shortly before his death, commissioned Jacques Rouayroux to bring to light the full richness of his work, which inevitably remained hidden for too long in his studio. Only this approach would allow, according to Ndary Lo, to grasp the depth of his creation and the thought from which the creative moment was born. This book is therefore more than a monograph based on the artist's works and enlightened and illuminating articles by specialists in art and Ndary Lo's work: it allows us to resonate with the artist's inner thoughts, to grasp his intentions, to follow the meanders of his creative process. His notebooks nourish the unfolding of the book, the framework of certain essays and, of course, are also visual documents that complete the rich iconography allowing us to grasp Ndary Lo's work in its diversity. Photos of the artist's emblematic sculptures, known or unknown, archive photos that show works in situ during major installations, presented either opposite the texts when they shed specific light on them, or in a dedicated section, they have the power to capture an artist in his flight, a theme dear to Ndary Lo. The official launch of the book will take place in Dakar at the Aux 4 Vents bookstore on the occasion of the Dak'Art Off Biennale.
