Recent archaeological and restoration work on two of the most famous monuments of Gothic architecture and sculpture—the Abbey Church of Saint-Denis and Chartres Cathedral—has led to important advances in the stylistic study and chronology of early Gothic sculpture. This research is brought together here and compared with the collections of Romanesque sculpture and early Gothic art from the Île-de-France region, as well as significant stonework collections from several buildings, held at the Cluny Museum. Sculpture is considered in the context of the new art of building in the Île-de-France region, in the decade around 1130 and within the geographical limits of its original cradle. The key phases in the chronology of early Gothic sculpture are traced, showing their decisive role in the development of this great artistic movement.
