It could be titled: Anthology of the Art of Swimming, because swimming must indeed be considered an art, a form of knowledge, as Plato reminds us twice (in the Gorgias and in The Laws) by emphasizing that the ignorant is the one who knows neither read nor write... nor swim. The art, therefore, of moving in this strange liquid of which it seems our bodies are composed for more than half and in which humanity itself comes to light inside the bodies of mothers. Thus, swimming would seem to be one of the major ways of confronting the universe itself, of making one's own body confront the body of the world and of digging new paths through which the spirit can engage. And this is surely why so many writers, from Antiquity to the present day, have taken up this theme by composing texts of great beauty, among them JH. Hamel took pleasure in preserving the most revealing ones, in order to compose, for the pleasure of all, this admirable anthology.
