Besançon, the historic capital of French watchmaking, boasts a significant watchmaking heritage, preserved by the Musée du Temps. This heritage, little known to the general public since the closure of the watchmaking rooms of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, deserves a major exhibition dedicated to it. In the exhibition rooms of the Musée du Temps, under the roof structure of the main attic, a selection of approximately 150 to 200 objects will be presented, mostly watches, but also cases, enameled plaques, watchmaking tools, and iconographic documents. The exhibition, organized according to a chronological framework, aims to trace the main developments of the mechanical watch from the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century, both in their aesthetic and technical aspects. The objective of the exhibition is to help the public understand the main constituent elements of a watch, while evoking the history of this object, between the quest for precision and a mark of social status. Particular attention is paid to the role played by Besançon in the history of French watchmaking, through the evocation of the context of watchmaking production at the time.
