Richly illustrated, this volume is a real surprise for the eyes of the reader who wanders through the different sections of the book intended to celebrate the 400th anniversary anniversary of the birth of the famous author, actor and playwright Molière.

Some 150 theatrical costumes and a collection of sketches and photographs constitute the important iconographic apparatus of the work and highlight the different themes linking Molière to stage costume. Selected for their singular character or emblematic of a director – Don Juan by Louis Jouvet, Dandin by Roger Planchon or The Imaginary Invalid by Jean-Marie Villégier – or by a costume designer like Christian Bérard, Suzanne Lalique or Patrice Cauchetier, the costumes are also the reflection of particular trends: historical reconstruction, echo of the fashion of an era or historical transposition, or even the fruit of the imagination of a designer.

In addition to the works and costumes, most of which come from the collections of the Centre national du costume de scène in Moulins, the Comédie-Française and the Department of Performing Arts of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, there are loans from theatres, companies and cultural institutions such as the Théâtre national populaire in Villeurbanne and the Maison Jean Vilar.
