Charles Milcendeau (1872-1919) is one of the great draftsmen of the late 19th century. Trained at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he rubbed shoulders in the studio of Gustave Moreau with Georges Rouault, Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet, with whom he would become friends. Recognized by the art critics of his time and exhibited in the most prestigious museums in France and abroad, Charles Milcendeau astonished and became known for the realism of his works, the landscapes between sea and countryside, the intimate scenes of these "marais" populations (in the region of the Breton-Vendéen marsh) that he loved so much and his other paintings with themes nourished by his many travels (Brittany, Corsica, the Netherlands, Spain, etc.).
This large-format coffee-table book explores his career with expert texts and 130 illustrations. Milcendeau's works are exhibited in major museums, including Orsay in Paris and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes. A museum is also entirely dedicated to him in Soullans, Vendée, where a large part of his creations are preserved and documented.
