Bilingual collection. The epitaphios, the funeral oration, was the speech that democratic Athens delivered to the glory of its heroes who died on the battlefield. In the Menexenus, Socrates in turn repeats an oration, but it is a virulent pastiche, whose purpose is to demonstrate that Athenian history is not the heroic gesture that the orators praise, but the unfortunate debacle of a belligerent empire incapable of reforming itself in the face of the Persian advance (386). The Menexenus is a political pamphlet.
