It was in Nice and its surrounding areas, in Vallauris and Vence, that Matisse and Picasso regularly rubbed shoulders from the 1940s onwards, both finding in this Mediterranean space the source of their inspiration. Between dialogue and rivalry, their relationship, nourished by constant exchanges, undoubtedly resulted in one of the most fruitful artistic emulations of the 20th century. Paintings, sculptures and graphic works by each of the two artists respond to each other in subtle and fascinating mirror effects.
Mirror games also exist between the painter and his model, between the painter and himself. A close mesh that was at the heart of the reflection led by the two artists on the questions of the representation of the body and the self-reflexivity of the creative act. Photographs of their respective studios, too, to highlight the differences and similarities of atmosphere; documents - correspondence, exhibition catalogs, magazines and films - to illustrate the history of the Matisse-Picasso links through the prism of this particular theme: that of the "comedy of the model", as Aragon liked to call a posing session.
