A tireless traveler, Albert Marquet crisscrossed the Normandy coast from 1903 to 1937 during seven stays (Flamanville, Le Havre, Fécamp, Trouville, Honfleur, Rouen, Vieux-Port and Dieppe) where he was trained by Henri Manguin then Raoul Dufy, Henri Matisse, Paul Signac and Félix Vallotton. He found there a testing ground for his work on color and patterns that he would continue to paint throughout his life well beyond Normandy: the maritime world, the port and its human activities, the beach, the boats and above all the water for which he had retained a taste since his childhood in Bordeaux.
A "plein-airist studio artist", Marquet painted from his window and invented in Normandy the formula of a landscape seen from above, sheltered from prying eyes, with a sense of framing, synthesis of forms and a very sure taste for color.
