It was Manessier the man who led me to his painting, offering me the opportunity to contribute to his next catalogue from my first visit to Emancé's studio in 1972. I continued, at his invitation, to write regularly about his work and to conduct long interviews with him until his accidental death in 1993. But my relationship with the painter and his painting had changed profoundly. In 1974, I was faced with works that predated our friendship, my gaze trying to uncover their secrets, to tame their otherness, to learn to see them. Over the years, the painter's approach had become familiar to me, his references, his colours, his lights were no longer foreign to me, I knew how to share his vision, and our dialogue was continuous. Focusing on essential works, of which it presents around sixty reproductions, giving access to irreplaceable words from Manessier himself, this collection bears witness to his long, tireless and fruitful quest for what Cézanne called "the truth in painting".
