The paintings of the painter René Magritte were often born from a dialogue with his close friends, a game of exchanges, of trials and errors, in which the painter's intentions were strengthened and his vocabulary was constructed. Far from profiting from the growing fame of their friend, the Brussels surrealists thus played a key role in the making of his work, intervening on the titles of the paintings as much as on their subjects, and forging with him the Magritte that we know. The selected texts (Paul Nougé, Marcel Marïen, Jacques Wergifosse, Irène Hamoir or Louis Scutenaire) are presented in the chronological order of their publication, to show the evolution of the painter's thought, and how his works were able to be constructed against the codes of representation of his time.
