The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon is associated with the celebration of the bicentenary of the decipherment of hieroglyphs by Jean-François Champollion, in 1822, through the scientific and friendly relationship maintained for more than twenty years by the first director of the Musée de Lyon, François Artaud (1767-1838), and Jean-François Champollion (1790-1832). At a time when hieroglyphic inscriptions were few in number in the collections, Artaud worked to provide original texts to Champollion, an essential source for understanding the writing of the ancient Egyptians. He also played an important role in his contacts with the world of collectors and major dealers in Egyptian antiquities, notably the famous Bernardino Drovetti. The exhibition will present Artaud's role throughout Jean-François Champollion's life and will emphasize the importance of ancient Egypt in Lyon from the 17th century.

Exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon from October 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022
