This book is neither a biography nor a photo-biography, but rather a visual – and sometimes moving – reference work that allows the reader to enter the world of the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian (1872–1944).

We follow Mondrian step by step throughout his artistic journey, from Amsterdam to the effervescence of Paris in the 1920s and 1930s, ending in New York, where he died in 1944. The central theme is Mondrian's studios—almost works of art in themselves, with their white-painted walls and artfully arranged colored quadrangles. The numerous photographs of these spaces, many by famous photographers, are as fascinating as those of Mondrian's guests, who were often also famous artists. Mondrian's strong personality and personal 'style' are the subject of another visual narrative, although numerous previously unseen snapshots of him with friends on trips, at openings, and at dinner parties reveal his informal side. The hundreds of photographs, accompanied by detailed captions, and the abundantly illustrated contributions on the significance of photography in the context of Mondrian and his work, make this work a unique and valuable historical document.
