Louis Pons (1927-2021) was first and foremost an exceptional draftsman, recognizable by his lines, which he intertwines and superimposes to create enigmatic beings whose nature – human, animal or plant – remains ambiguous.
From 1959, Louis Pons transposed his universe into assemblages which were exhibited at the Chave gallery from 1962, then at the Point Cardinal and at the Claude Bernard gallery from 1984. From these bits of nothing, from these discarded objects which, dispossessed of their function, are nothing more than the carcass of themselves, he tirelessly created objects which exert an almost magical power of attraction-repulsion on the spectator.
Louis Pons, a man of words, lines and traces, takes us into a sometimes nightmarish world on the edge of a fantastic universe, when he is not kept at a distance by the humor that dissipates its monstrosities.
The exhibition catalogue reproduces over a hundred works, both drawings and assemblages by Louis Pons. His entire period of activity is represented and allows us to appreciate the unity and coherence of the work of this unique artist.
