The Crystal Staircase, a renowned store that, from the Palais-Royal to the Opera, lasted from the Empire until 1923. It is part of a family history, of which one of the authors of this book is the heir. The story begins with the arrival of Madame Désarnaud. By assembling cut crystal and gilded bronze in an original and spectacular way, she quickly acquired a great reputation. During the First Empire, she had a surprising and magical staircase installed, the name alone of which could not fail to excite the curiosity of the public and chroniclers. Under the July Monarchy, Émile Pannier brilliantly took over the store. His two sons, Georges and Henry, endowed with solid training, became men of taste. Fashion collectors and creators, they managed to maintain, in the field of decoration, a tradition of high quality, while simultaneously trying to adapt to current fashions. Our work will, we hope, help to raise awareness of the history of the luxury trade, and more broadly that of the bourgeoisie, its rise, its behavior, its practices and its tastes.
