This book traces the long and eventful history of the tombs of Philip the Bold (1342-1404) and John the Fearless (1371-1419), Dukes of Burgundy, true masterpieces of Gothic sculpture. Initially installed in the Chartreuse de Champmol, necropolis of the dynasty of the Dukes of Valois, these masterpieces of Gothic sculpture, born from the hand of the greatest artists of the time, Jean de Marville, Claus Slutter and Claus de Werve, suffered the ravages of the Revolution. Partially destroyed, the tombs were dismantled, and many fragments were dispersed. In the 19th century, a real work of reassembly and restoration began, allowing the pieces to be restored to their proper place in the Guard Room of the Dukes' Palace. Based on precious archival documents (informal notes and official documents) as well as the expert testimony of a restorer, Sophie Jugie and Françoise Baron meticulously reconstruct the fascinating history of this restoration from the 19th century to the present day.
