The ancient Romans' passion for circus games, especially chariot races, seems, at first glance, to be nothing more than a cliché found in ancient literature. However, this phenomenon is confirmed by numerous archaeological objects and remains. After presenting the sources available to us on spectators of Roman circuses, this study attempts to understand their reactions in the stands, drawing in particular on recent research in the psychology of emotions and the sociology of sport. Finally, the last part of this book is devoted to the emperor and highlights the many interests, but also the dangers, that these mass entertainments represented for the imperial power.
