Explored and excavated since the mid-19th century, Iron Age underground passages are one of the characteristic features of Gallic farms on the Armorican Peninsula. Since the 1980s, the existence of similar structures has been revealed in the Caen plain and in the Bessin region of western Normandy, as well as wooded cellars. The study of more than 460 structures has made it possible to draw up a typology of underground architecture, to specify their particularities, their method of excavation and construction, their links with the habitats that house them, and to consider their evolution during the Iron Age.
