From the fifth to the early eleventh century, Christian France constructed buildings necessary for worship. For five centuries, architects freed themselves from ancient art and created new forms of architecture that gave rise to Romanesque art. These monuments and the remains of these buildings can be found throughout France. Often overlooked or assimilated to the buildings that would follow them, the pre-Romanesque sites built during the Merovingian and Carolingian periods represent an important part of medieval architecture. They were the source of Romanesque art.
