Although these seven great pre-Islamic poems are famous and recognized as the source of all Arabic poetry, there are only a few complete and coherent translations, and they are not without criticism: too far removed from the text or too academic. This is why Pierre Larcher, a renowned linguist and professor at Aix-en-Provence, undertook this complete translation, annotated and commented, which his master André Miquel hails in his preface as an event: rigorously faithful to the text, and therefore to the meaning, through recourse to the numerous commentaries made by Arab poets over the centuries, Larcher has nevertheless managed to keep the rhythm, the wild sounds of these nomadic songs.
