The poems collected here were composed over the centuries by Korean Buddhist monks. In Korea, as in China and Japan, monks expressed themselves through calligraphy, painting, poetry, or all three, as art supported the spiritual life.
Imbued with the "spirit of the Way," these poems, concise and devoid of any embellishment, restore moments, deliver the essence of what these monks experienced, for whom nature was a familiar and beneficial presence.
From her teenage years, partly influenced by Buddhism, Hai Ja Bang embarked on a path of inner search. Offering a sense of peace, order, and serenity, the works and calligraphy presented in this "Notebook" reflect her quest for enlightenment.
